Due to the expected arrival of Hurricane Irma, changes have been made in the upcoming sports schedules for Francis Marion University.
As is the case with many public and private universities in the eastern portion of South Carolina, FMU will close at 12:30 pm on Friday (Sept. 8) in order to allow our students ample time to arrive home in advance of Governor McMaster's evacuation order, expected to be enforced early Saturday morning (Sept. 9). This additional time will also allow our students to avoid the heavier traffic presently generated by evacuees from Florida and Georgia.
The FMU Invitational Volleyball Tournament will go on as scheduled on Friday, but Saturday's matches have all been canceled. Among Friday's six matches, Francis Marion will play Converse College at noon and Chowan University at 6 p.m.
The men's soccer match between Francis Marion and Newberry College set for Saturday evening at 7 p.m. on Hartzler Field has been canceled.
Several Patriot squads will also not travel to scheduled out-of-town events. The men's and women's cross country teams will not travel to the AU Jaguar Invitational Meet in Augusta, Ga., on Saturday, and the women's soccer team will not make its scheduled trip to Carson-Newman University on Saturday.
The FMU golf team was to have participated in the Invitational at the Ocean Course hosted by the College of Charleston on Kiawah Island, S.C., and scheduled for Monday and Tuesday, but that event has been canceled.
- The Patriot softball ID camp set for Sunday, Sept. 10, on the FMU campus has been canceled.
The Governor has further indicated that he will likely close South Carolina schools and governmental offices on Monday and Tuesday of next week, but that decision will be made over the weekend as Irma's path becomes more evident.
