FMU Cagers entertain Bearcats on Wednesday

Francis Marion University women and men's basketball teams will host long-time Peach Belt Conference foe Lander University on Wednesday (Jan. 10) in the Smith University Center with the women's game tipping-off at 5:30 p.m. and the men to follow at 7:30 p.m. The men's game will be the program's annual Sea of Red contest.

Admission is $8 for adults, $5 for students, and Francis Marion students will be admitted for free with an ID. The doubleheader will be streamed live, online at, courtesy of the Patriots Sports Network.

The FMU women's squad (8-3, 5-1) is riding a five-game winning streak and is led by senior guard Khai Chandler with 19.5 points per game, while junior Shaunice Fulmore is averaging 19.0 ppg and hauling in 6.5 rebounds per game. Sophomore guard Abigail Bullock has recorded 14.4 ppg and 4.0 assists per game with a 43.1 field goal percentage.

The conference-leading Bearcats (11-2, 6-1), ranked 20th in the latest media Top 25 poll and 25th in the coaches' poll, are led by senior center Breshay Johnson with 16.5 ppg and a team-leading 8.3 rpg, while four other Lander players are averaging in double figures.

The Patriot women lead the all-time series, which dates back to FMU's second-ever game on Jan. 12, 1974, by a 55-33 count.  That advantage includes a 71-61 victory last year in Florence.

On the men's side, the 8-3 Patriot squad (3-3 in conference play) is led by senior Detrek Browning with 22.9 ppg, while junior forward Brandon Parker has contributed 15.2 ppg this season. Senior Judah Alexander is averaging 7.9 ppg, while recording a team-high 8.1 rpg.

Browning, coming off a night where he moved into the number-one spot on the FMU all-time career scoring list, now sits at 1,871 total points.  FMU and the Lander have met every season since the Patriots' first campaign in 1970-71 with the Bearcats leading by a 53-44 margin.  The two squads have split their two regular-season meetings each of the past five years.

Lander (6-7, 2-5) is led by junior guard Rahu Purdie with a 16.5 ppg average.
