Browning turns GOAT (the great kind) in overtime of Patriot win !

FLORENCE, SC – Senior guard Detrek Browning scored nine of his game-high 31 points in overtime as Francis Marion University pulled away to an 84-77 victory over Lander University, Wednesday night (Jan. 10) in Peach Belt Conference men's basketball action.

FMU snaps a three-game skid and improves to 9-3 overall and 4-3 in the PBC.  The Patriots will hit the road for a three-game trip beginning with a Saturday afternoon game at Georgia Southwestern State University tipping off at 3:30 p.m.  The next home contest for FMU will be Jan. 20 at 3:30 p.m. against Flagler College.

Browning finished the night 10-of-19 from the floor and 8-of-8 at the foul line, while also tallying four assists and three steals.  Already owning the school career scoring record, he became the first Patriot to surpass 1,900 points as his total now stands at 1,902. He is only 53 assists away from becoming the program's career leader in that category as well.

Sophomore point guard Jaquez Smith followed Browning with 11 points, while junior forward Brandon Parker posted his second double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds before fouling out.

Junior guard Rahu Purdie led Lander (6-8, 2-6) with 22 points and five assists, while Jordan Dingle scored 15 points.

After Purdie gave Lander a 71-69 lead to open the overtime session, Browning scored Francis Marion's next nine points as the Patriots took a 78-73 advantage with 2:51 left in the extra session.  After the Bearcats trimmed the margin to 81-77 entering the final minute, Smith sealed the win with a wicked step-back jumper from the top-of-the-key with 24 ticks left on the clock.

The Patriots trailed for much of the first half, but claimed a 37-35 lead on a Ryan Davis lay-up with nine seconds remaining before halftime.

A pair of free throws by Browning extended the FMU lead to seven points (56-49) with 12:09 left in regulation.  An inside hoop by FMU sophomore Kendall Wall gave Francis Marion a 64-57 advantage with 6:38 remaining, but Lander closed out regulation on a 12-5 run to force overtime.  The Bearcats tied the game at 69-69 on two free throws by Purdie with 40 seconds left.  FMU had three shots to win the contest in regulation but none fell.

Francis Marion shot 42.6 percent from the floor, including 5-of-5 in the overtime, and the Patriots were 8-of-25 from three-point range and 18-of-22 at the free throw line.  Lander connected on 41.9 percent of its shots, including 5-of-16 from behind the arc, and hit 20-of-28 charity tosses.  However, the Bearcats were only 2-of-7 from the field in the extra session.

FMU also forced 20 Bearcat turnovers and the Patriots held a 29-10 advantage in points-off-turnovers.
