Team effort allows FMU to avoid Bear attack and claim 80-72 win

RALEIGH, NC – Freshman forward Kailex Stephens scored 16 points to lead five Francis Marion University players in double figures as the Patriots claimed an 80-72 road win over Shaw University, Tuesday evening (Nov. 20) in non-conference men's basketball action.

The Patriots (3-1) will return to the court on Saturday, Dec. 1, when FMU opens Peach Belt Conference play by hosting the University of North Georgia at 3:30 p.m.

Stephens also hauled down seven rebounds, while making 3-of-4 three-point attempts.  Junior Kendall Wall tallied a career-high 13 points as he scored in double figures for the third straight contest, while senior Je'Quan Perry also scored 13 points, senior Brandon Parker 12, and junior point guard Jaquez Smith 12.  Wall had five points in a decisive 7-0 run midway through the second half.  Parker led FMU with a game-high nine rebounds.

Francis Marion hit 10-of-20 shots from behind the arc and trailed on only two occasions, once late in the first half and once early in the second stanza.

Amir Hinton led the Bears (3-2) with 26 points and seven rebounds, while Kelsie DaVaughn registered 20 points.

A dunk by Wall put FMU up 25-17 midway through the opening half.  A three-pointer by Stephens also gave the Patriots an eight-point advantage (30-22) with 7:31 left before halftime.

Shaw responded with a 10-0 spurt to take its first lead at 32-30 after a pair of free throws by Hinton.  Jump shots by freshman Winston Hill and Parker allowed FMU to retake the lead, and later a three-pointer by Smith helped the Patriots lead 37-36 at intermission.

A bucket by Hinton to open the second half gave the Bears a 38-37, but Stephens hit a three-pointer to retake the lead for FMU.  With the score knotted at 40-40, Francis Marion scored eight straight points only to have Shaw answer with an 8-0 spurt to again deadlock the contest at 48-48.

A three-pointer by Wall gave the Patriots the lead for good at 51-48 and it started a 7-0 run as FMU went up 55-48 with 10:52 remaining.  A jumper by Perry extended the lead to 69-61 with 3:23 on the clock, but the Bears rallied to pull within 69-66.  Lay-ins by Smith and Wall pushed the Patriot advantage to 73-66 and Francis Marion connected on 5-of-6 free throws over the final 45 seconds to seal the victory.

Francis Marion drained 61.5 percent of its second-half shots and finished the game at 45.9 percent, while also making 14-of-23 free throws.  Shaw was held to 40 percent shooting, including only 10-of-31 from beyond the arc, while hitting 14-of-16 shots at the foul line.
