Francis Marion University men's basketball coach Gary Edwards has announced the signing of 6-5 wing players Jamal Edmonson (pictured right) of Ladson, S.C., and Stan Eze of Marietta, Ga., during the recent signing period. They will enroll at FMU in the fall of 2019 and suit up for the Patriots starting in 2019-20.
Edmonson is currently a senior at Ashley Ridge High School in Summerville, S.C., where he plays for coach Curtis Capers. After beginning his high school career at Northwoods Academy in Summerville, where he was an All-Region and All-State performer, Edmonson transferred to Ashley Ridge in 2017.
This season, he is averaging 19.7 points, 7.7 rebounds, and 2.6 assists per game, while shooting 81 percent at the free throw line. He garnered MVP honors at the Hoops for Hope Tournament.
Playing for current FMU assistant coach Brad Dobbels, he averaged 21.3 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 2.5 assists per contest as a junior and helped lead the Swamp Foxes to a 15-8 record. His performance earned him All-Region honors, the SCHSL Class 5A Region VIII Player of the Year award, and a nod on the South Carolina Basketball Coaches Association (SCBCA) 5A All-State Team.
Edmonson has played club ball with Game Elite Black 2019.
"Jamal is a very accomplished player, is ready to play right now, and will likely log meaningful minutes as a freshman," Edwards said. "He has a good collegiate body, is a great competitor, and is versatile in that he could wind up playing every position in our system."
Eze was born in Nigeria and moved to the United States when he was 16 years old. He is currently a senior at Mt. Bethel Christian Academy, where he plays under the direction of coach Cal Boyd. He is currently averaging 17.4 points, 8.7 rebounds, and 2.1 steals per contest, and was recently named to the All-Tournament Team at the Arby's Classic in Bristol, Tenn.
Eze is coming off a junior season during which he averaged 14.5 points, 8.3 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game, helping the Eagles to a 28-7 record and their third straight state title. Following the season, Eze was selected to the Georgia Independent Christian Athletic Association (GCIAA) All-Star Game.
He played on the adidas Gauntlet squad in 2017 and for the Georgia Stars 17U team on Nike's EYBL Circuit this past summer. Eze is the 42nd-ranked recruit in the state of Georgia for the class of 2019.
"Stan is a tremendous young man who has played solid high school ball and gotten good coaching," Edwards said. "He can excel defensively right now, and is a work-in-progress at the offensive end. That being said, he is raw with lots of physical talent. We needed more athleticism and he gives us that. He is a big piece of the puzzle in this recruiting class."
Edmonson and Eze join 6-1 guard Loginn Norton of Richmond, Va., in the FMU men's basketball team's recruiting class of 2019.
This year's Francis Marion squad is off to a 7-2 start, and will host nationally ranked USC Aiken on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
