FLORENCE, SC – Sophomore Damien Tergella and freshman Jonas Dovland both scored their first goals of the 2017 campaign to lead Francis Marion University to a key 2-1 win over Clayton State University, Saturday evening (Sept. 30) in Peach Belt Conference men's college soccer action.
Francis Marion improves to 5-3-0 overall and 1-2-0 in the Peach Belt, while Clayton State drops to 4-5-0 and 0-2-0.
The Patriots will play at Southern Wesleyan University on Wednesday at 7 p.m. The next home match for FMU will be Oct. 14 against Lenoir-Rhyne University at 7 p.m.
Tergella gave Francis Marion a 1-0 advantage at the 12:43 mark. The ball was played out to the left side for senior midfielder Gaspard Mianne whose cross went through the box to sophomore Jordan Dechere. Dechere's shot from 15 yards out was saved but not covered by Laker goalkeeper Oliver Pannell, and the rebound fell to Tergella who tapped the ball in from short range.
Despite numerous scoring opportunities for the Patriots in the second half, the margin remained 1-0 into the 88th minute. Tergella had a shot from 13 yards out that was deflected over the crossbar for a corner in the 63rd minute, and Mianne and junior forward Levin Sandmann each had shots that missed the target in the 64th and 75th minutes.
Sandmann dribbled down the right sideline in the 88th minute and his cross through the box found Dovland for a relatively easy tap-in score from eight yards out into an open goal.
That score proved crucial as the Lakers got on the scoreboard with 8.4 seconds remaining. Kwaku Dwamena knocked in a loose ball as a mass of humanity tried to gain control of the sphere.
FMU freshman goalkeeper Raul Guillamon Bejar finished with three saves, while Pannell posted two stops. Guillamon Bejar's most interesting save came in the 40th minute when he blocked a shot by Dwamena, but the ball rolled behind him and he was able to dive on it just before it crossed the goal line. A save by the Patriot keeper in the 90th minute led to a corner kick that preceded the Laker goal.
Both Sandmann and Tergella had three shots apiece for the Patriots, who defeated the Lakers for the 12th time in 28 all-time meetings (12-10-6 record).
Clayton State held a 13-10 lead in shots and a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks.
