Sharp-shooting Patriots capture 83-72 road win

AMERICUS, GA – Senior Shaunice Fulmore scored a game-high 24 points, including 12 in a key second-quarter explosion, as Francis Marion claimed an 83-72 road win over Georgia Southwestern State University, Monday afternoon (Dec. 17) in Peach Belt Conference women's basketball action.

Francis Marion improves to 4-2 overall and evens its PBC mark at 1-1, while the Lady Hurricanes drop to 3-5 and 0-2.  FMU concludes its three-game road trip with an 11 a.m. match-up on Wednesday with Columbus State University.

The next home game for the Patriots will be Jan. 5 against Young Harris College at 1:30 p.m.

Francis Marion shot 59.6 percent from the floor – its highest figure in four seasons – and made 20-of-34 free throws.

Fulmore registered her point total after being held scoreless in the opening quarter. The Lake City native connected on 10-of-21 shots from the floor, grabbed seven rebounds, and handed out four assists.  She also surpassed the 1,500-point mark for her career and moved past former Patriot Lisa Waldrop (1983-87) for 12th place on the FMU career scoring list.  She also moved into the Top-25 for career rebounding with 539.

A pair of Patriots came off the bench to record double-digit scoring outputs: junior 6-2 center Tatyana McClaney with a career-high equaling 14 on 6-of-9 shooting and sophomore Kiana Adderton with 13.

Graduate student Briana Burgins added her second double-double of the season with 12 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.  She moved into 13th place on the Patriot career rebounding list with 765 rebounds, passing former FMU All-American Jennifer Brabson (1996-2000), and into 27th place on the scoring list with 1,088 points, passing former Patriot guard Sherer Gordon (1991-95).

Lex Chatman and Mariya Trimble paced GSW with 12 points apiece as a dozen Lady Hurricanes entered the scoring column.

Following a first quarter that ended deadlocked at 17-17, Fulmore sparked the Patriots to a 26-point outburst that gave FMU a lead it would never relinquish.  Trailing 24-19 only 1:05 into the second period, Fulmore scored 10 consecutive points to put Francis Marion ahead 29-24.  That 10-0 run also started a 24-7 spurt over the final 8:28 of the half that gave the Patriots a 43-31 halftime advantage.  FMU connected on 8-of-13 field goal attempts in the quarter.

The margin hovered around the 10-point mark for much of the third quarter, but GSW did pull within 54-52 with 32 ticks left.  However, freshman center Zaria Woods connected on a  jumper and then Adderton was fouled on a three-point attempt with less than a second remaining, and her three free throws pushed the lead to seven points (59-52) entering the final period.

A 12-2 run to open the fourth quarter produced the Patriots' largest lead at 71-54. The Lady Hurricanes responded with a nine straight points to draw with eight (71-63) with 4:50 left.  Two buckets by Fulmore and a fast-break lay-in by sophomore guard Khamele Manning extended the margin back to 13 with 3:42 left. FMU shot a sizzling 71.4 percent over the final 10 minutes.

GSW connected on 35.7 percent of its shots and was only 7-of-17 from the charity stripe.
