GREENWOOD, SC – Francis Marion University had two chances early in the game to grab the lead against Lander University, but were not able to put the ball in the back of the net. The Bearcats went on to score once in each half, shutting out the Patriots 2-0, Wednesday evening (Sept. 27) in Peach Belt Conference women's soccer action.
FMU (3-3-0, 0-2-0) will play next on Saturday as the Patriots host Clayton State University with the match time set for 3 p.m. on Hartzler Field in the Griffin Athletic Complex.
Lander moves to 5-2-0 overall and 2-1-0 in the Peach Belt.
The Bearcats got on the board in the 28th minute as senior forward Sara Flores scored her first goal of the season. Freshman Chloe Le Franc clinched the result for the Bearcats at the 83:25 mark as she also tallied her first goal of the season.
The Bearcats outshot Francis Marion 20-11, while both squads had nine corner kicks. Eight of the Patriots' corners came in the second half, including a handful while the margin was still one goal.
FMU sophomore goalkeeper Micahla Kitchen made her first start of the year and compiled seven saves, while freshman goalie Sarah Owen had two stops and Hannah Cowan one for Lander. Among Kitchen's saves was a 61st minute stop of a penalty kick by Flores.
Freshman Kylie McElroy led FMU with four shots, including one on frame.
