Patriot Volleyball falls to Rams and Royals

CHARLOTTE, NC – Francis Marion University lost a pair of 3-1 decisions to Winston-Salem State University and Queens University of Charlotte, Thursday (Sept. 2) at the Queens Fall Invitational Volleyball Tournament.

The young Patriots (0-4) of first-year head coach Lauren Baufield will return home to host their annual FMU Invitational Tournament next weekend (Sept. 8-9) in the Smith University Center. On Friday, Francis Marion will play Converse College at noon and Chowan University at 6 p.m.  On Saturday, FMU will face Newberry College at 11 a.m. and Belmont Abbey College at 3 p.m.

Francis Marion lost a narrow decision to WSSU by scores of 25-19, 17-25, 26-24, and 25-23.  Junior Georgia Garrison paced FMU with 20 kills, 12 digs, and five service aces, while freshman Kayla Arthur added 10 kills and senior Erika Hartings and sophomore Lenee' Blot nine kills apiece.  Freshman Tori Carpenter (21) and junior Carrie McGinnis (19) combined for 40 assists from the setter position.  Hartings led the Patriots with 14 digs.

The final three sets featured a combined 16 ties and seven lead changes.

In the 25-15, 25-17, 23-25, 27-25 loss to the host Royals (4-0), Blot pounded out a career-high 12 kills with a .385 attack percentage, while Garrison added 11 kills and 15 digs, and senior Shelbi Meek a career-high 10 kills to go with 15 digs.  McGinnis (23) and Carpenter (17) again combined for 40 assists, while sophomore libero Natalie Vaughn dug up a career-high 26 balls.

The final two sets featured a combined 18 deadlocks and six lead changes.

Following play, Blot was named to the All-Tournament Team.
