FMU Volleyball falls to Jaguars in PBC Quarterfinals

GREENWOOD, SC – The Francis Marion University volleyball team saw its season come to an end with a 25-16, 25-21, 25-11 loss to Augusta University, Saturday afternoon (Nov. 10) in the quarterfinals of the 2018 Peach Belt Conference Tournament in Greenwood, S.C.

FMU ends its campaign with a 13-15 record, a four-win improvement over the 2017 season. The third-seeded Jaguars (22-7) advance to Saturday evening's semifinals.

Freshman Alyssa Hansen led the Patriots with eight kills, three blocks, and a .412 hitting percentage, while freshman Iyanla Thigpen tallied five kills and three blocks. Senior Carrie McGinnis dished out 12 assists, while freshman Finn Millians chipped in seven assists.

Freshman Alexis Watts led FMU with 10 digs, while senior Georgia Garrison served three aces.

Garrison finished her collegiate career with 1,039 kills and 1,156 digs, while McGinnis registered 2,725 assists and 733 digs. Both were playing in their 107th career match.

McKenzey Beck's triple-double led Augusta as she recorded 13 kills, 18 assists, and 10 digs.

The Jaguars scored the opening three points of the first set and never trailed. FMU did get to within 10-8, but a 6-1 spurt by Augusta stretched the margin to 16-9.

In the tightly-fought second set, Francis Marion took a 13-12 lead on a kill by sophomore Courtney Abdur-Rahim. Augusta countered with a 6-0 run, but FMU answered with a 4-0 spurt to trail by only one at 18-17. An ace by sophomore Natalie Ferrell brought the Patriots to within 21-20, but the Jaguars registered four of the final five points to win 25-21.

Augusta scored the first four points and eventually led 10-1 to open the third set.
