Harney homers twice as FMU earns split at UNCP

PEMBROKE, NC – Senior first baseman Jessica Harney hit a pair of home runs and drove in four runs to power Francis Marion University to a 7-1 victory over UNC Pembroke and to a split of Tuesday afternoon's (April 16) Peach Belt Conference softball doubleheader.  The Braves held off the Patriots for a 2-1 win in game one.

Francis Marion (29-18, 8-10) will conclude its regular-season schedule with a Senior Day twin bill on Saturday at 1 p.m. against Lander University.

Patriot senior shortstop Taylor Johnson rapped out two hits in each game of the twin bill, including a double in game two that tied the FMU career record for two-baggers with 47.  She now stands even with three former Patriots: Shannan Tyson (2006-09), Janine Allen (2004-07), and Laurie Niego (2000-03).

FMU sophomore right-hander Katelyn Ellard (17-9) received the decision in both games.  In game two, she relieved Patriot starter Amie Hutchison and tossed 4.2 scoreless innings, allowing only one hit.

Harney led off the top of the second with her ninth home run of the season, but UNCP knotted the score in third on an RBI double by catcher Jordan Adcox.

The Patriots tallied the eventual winning run in the fifth on a two-out, run-scoring single to right centerfield by Johnson.

FMU freshman Addie May accounted for a pair of insurance runs in the top of the seventh with a two-run pinch-hit homer over the center field fence.  It was her second home run in as many pinch hitting appearances.  Four batters later, Harney blasted a three-run shot over the left field fence expanding the FMU lead to 7-1.

Harney's 10 homers rank as the third-highest single-season total in Patriot history, joining Kelly Kermode who hit 10 in 1998.  Harney set the single record with 13 last year.

Raygan Larson (4-4) was the losing pitcher in the second contest.

In the opener, an RBI triple by center fielder Rendi Wetherington and a run-scoring single by Adcox staked UNCP to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first.

Francis Marion trimmed the margin in half in the sixth when freshman right fielder Danielle Karacson doubled and eventually scored on a passed ball.

In the seventh, Taylor and senior third baseman Angela Buccilli both singled with two outs, but FMU could not push across the tying run.

Ellard went the distance in the loss, surrendering the two runs on five hits with six strikeouts.

Right-hander Malerie Leviner (10-10) earned the complete-game win as she scattered seven hits and fanned three, while allowing only the one unearned run.
