YOUNG HARRIS, GA – Young Harris College scored the only goal of the match 97 seconds after kickoff on a deflected pass and the Mountain Lions claimed a 1-0 victory over Francis Marion University, Saturday afternoon (Oct. 5) in Peach Belt Conference women's soccer action.
FMU (3-4-1 overall, 0-3 PBC), will play at Georgia College on Wednesday at 7 p.m. The Patriots will then celebrate Senior Day on Saturday, Oct. 12, when they entertain Georgia Southwestern State University for a 4 p.m. kick-off.
Young Harris' Eline Sand scored the lone goal at the 1:37 mark after a Payton Putzer cross deflected off of the FMU goalkeeper. Sand gathered the ball and knocked it into the net at the back post.
Francis Marion outshot the Mountain Lions 14-12 and both squads earned six corner kicks.
Young Harris goalkeeper Pien Van Kampen registered four saves while posting the shutout and helping the Mountain Lions improve to 3-5-0 and 2-1-0.
McEwen forced a save by Van Kampen with a shot in the 23rd minute. Orello looked to knot the score, but her attempt was stopped by Van Kampen 51 seconds into the second half. The Mountain Lion keeper also thwarted attempts by Barrett in the 74th minute and Orello again in the 79th minute.
